Should software also be beautiful?
We know software must be useful and performant. But does beauty really matter? I believe it does — and that it pays off.

Software must first be useful, performant and easy to use. That’s what ensures a pleasant experience and encourages users to come back. But then comes another question: does beauty matter?
Delight the user
A polished interface, well-chosen colors, an elegant presentation can make all the difference. A disappointed user rarely returns; a charmed one often does.
Ensure the product’s longevity
Beautiful software inspires trust and respect. User feedback is more positive, and the designers themselves are more motivated to improve it. Conversely, an ugly application — even a functional one — risks being replaced sooner.
A worthwhile investment
Investing in the beauty of software doesn’t cost much more, but it returns far more. To draw a parallel: we’d all rather drive a beautiful car than an ugly one, wouldn’t we?
